"Oh the places you'll
go" - Dr. Seuss
In honor of graduation day... I would like
to enlighten you with 14 random things I learned in my college experience,
which had nothing to do with my major. You may be wondering why 14 things {kind
of a strange number, right?!}...Well I'm Natalie, and I like to do themes, and
this blog is all about being a 2014 grad :)
1- For starters, if you don't like coffee or
caffeinated beverages before college...you will develop a deep love for it
while your are cramming for tests, waking up early, and working on assignments
into the wee hours. {I speak from experience...I am now a coffee addict}
2- You will master the art of carrying your items
in one trip as opposed to making multiple trips to your dorm room. {Welcome the
gun show people}
3- You will find joy in the little things...like
finding a parking spot, a short line for food, or the elevator magically being
open... which means you shouldn't take the stairs.
4- Sleep...who needs sleep?! Really though....
Ain't nobody got time for that. I used to need 8 hours to function...but with
not having enough time in the day, I am lucky to get 4-5 hours of sleep a
night. You CAN do it! Toothpicks work great for keeping your eyes open ;)

5- Time management.... Every hour, minute, and
second counts. Or you just learn to run really fast to point A to point
B... *invest in running shoes... and an inhaler*
6- Go to all the school events, there is free
food and DANCING!
7- You will do so much growing up in your college
years, than in your entire life...especially if you leave home for a while. I
thought I knew who I was before attending GCU... but boy, oh boy, I did a lot
of growing up, and discovered who I truly am and stand for. I learned that I
have strange habits, say things funny, and where I stand with my faith. You
will also learn the end of your college experience is a very awkward
transition period of your life...
8- It is
hard living without a dog!!!... During the toughest weeks of school, work, and
leadership, all I wanted to do was cuddle with my dog. {Pillows do not cut
it!!}. If you haven't started college I would suggest looking into going to
counseling to get prescribed a therapy pet...You think I'm joking...Can't say
that I am.
9- Sometimes things in life do not make sense...
and that is OKAY! Just trust God that it will all work out. College years can
be messy, but your path will be paved... T-R-U-S-T!
10- The easiest way to get a guy's number is to
be in their group project... I mean, I am still single, but hey it made me feel
like I had some game to get a guy's number. {I live for small victories}
11- Don't worry about what others are doing. I
decided to take on another year at a community college to be a part of dance
company, and then when I transferred to GCU I added special education to my
major, which meant an extra year of school. I was devastated knowing that I
wasn't going to be done with my degree when my friends were at first.... But
remember your journey is YOUR journey. Eventually you will finish, or find
something else that makes you happy! You do not have to be like the rest!
12- You can never have too much toilet paper...just saying.
13- Not all of us will graduate with a "Mrs.
Degree"... Yes I am one of those lucky contestants that didn't even study
the subject apparently...but you know what?! I accomplished my goal, and can say
no man ever got in the way of that. As for now I continue chugging along, and
waiting until the right man comes along.
14- Be silly! There is so much stress that comes
with college, but always remember to take time out and be silly. When I say
"be silly", I mean embracing you're inner weirdo! I danced in class
like {yes, I even twerked}, made jokes, and goofed off with friends...and at
time, even strangers! Through my experience, I learned to embrace my
awkwardness, and know that it is just a part of who I am! Life is way too
precious to be serious all the time.
College has been one of the BEST experiences of
my life!!! I am so blessed I was able to enhance my education and be given
opportunities along the road that has help mold me to who I am today. It's a
bit bittersweet graduating today.... knowing some of the beautiful faces around
me I will never see again. It is a tad scary to get a diploma, which indicates
you are a big kid now...but it is so awesome that the countless hours of homework and studying was all worth it for this big day! Thanks for all of those who were a part of journey and supported me along the way.

yourself in any direction you choose." -Dr. Seuss
